Composition of water before filtration
According to the Environmental Working Group, there are many components within the water. The tap water from the surface sources such as lakes and rivers contain close to 300 and more chemicals, along with other pollutants.
Volatile Organic Chemicals
The Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) with high vapor pressure and low water solubility are among the many water occupants. They are human-made chemicals used in the day-to-day processes by man to produce different usages. These include paints, pharmaceuticals, refrigerants, varnishes, wax, and many others.
The VOCs have emitted a form of gases from liquids and solids whose effects may be both short- and long-term health effects. Common effects induced by VOCs include Eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, loss of coordination and nausea. Damage to the liver, kidney, and damage to the central nervous system.
Our freshwaters also contain many metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury. These are also considered as water pollutants. These harmful metals get into the water because of weathering of soils and rocks, volcanic eruptions, and human activities such as mining, processing, and others that involve the use of these metals. If consumed, such metals could be very harmful to the human body and general health.
Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs)
These chemicals block and interfere with hormones and activities of the body’s endocrine system, which is related to many health issues. In most cases, these EDC mimic hormones, which can turn their response and inappropriately trigger hormonal processes. They enter through our bodies through the food we eat, unpurified drinking water and even through inhalation via the nose.
How Do You Know That Your Water is Clean Enough?
It is always not that easy to determine your water quality be it already filtered or not. For the water from the taps, wells, rivers and lakes, boreholes, or water reservoirs, you can do a visual inspection. This is done by looking through that water into a transparent tin.
This is done by placing a little water in the tin and then looking through for any particles, insects, or any other residues. Or a small test on the water for any unpleasant tastes such as those induced by a high level of contaminants such as chloramine, iron, and dangerous chemicals.
Another commonly used method of telling whether your water is clean enough is the home water quality test kit which is not only for home but also can be for all water purposes and locations.
You must dip the strip in the kit into the water. Once it changes color, then the water contains some unrequired substances. However, this is not a reliable method, as some contaminants will not affect the test kit as it may be less sensitive to them.
The other appropriate method is having some of your water taken to the testing laboratory. However, this should be done with only certified labs. In the United States, those labs are certified by the EPA for every state or territory in the US.
What is water filtration?
Water filtration removes undesirable chemicals, biological contaminants, or reduces the concentration of particulate matter. It also includes suspended particles, parasites, bacteria, algae, viruses, and fungi to produce safe and clean water for use at home for drinking, medical, and industrial purposes.
Not all the contaminants will be removed from the water during purification, and it depends on the intended use of the water. The standards for drinking water quality are usually controlled by the country’s governments or by international standards.
For drinking water, most homes usually use the water; however, this is not 100% safe as some harmful contaminants will be left behind and others activated.
Water filtration methods
The activated carbon filtration method
Activated carbon filtration is the best option for removing water-polluting chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, and VOCs. Carbon block filters entirely remove all these contents from all kinds of water. Be it rainwater, pond water, and even seawater, turning it into safe drinking water.
The molecules in your drinking water are trapped in a carbon substrate’s porous structure whose filters are charcoal activated. This type of filtration does not remove naturally occurring minerals, hence leaving your water healthy with the minerals needed by your body.
With this method, you use deionization filters to remove dissolved impurities, or ions, from your drinking water. The beads of the filters comprise hydrogen ions which, when the impurity ions such as those of metal enter the filter, they are neutralized and then a metal and mineral-free water is achieved.
During the distillation process, water is heated and moisture turns into steam. The steam rises, cools down and becomes liquid, leaving the water contaminants behind in the boiling tank. With distillation, minerals and large particle pollutants are eliminated. This filtration method also kills bacteria. However, the endocrine disruptors and VOCs are hard to remove with these methods. This is because they vaporize at equal, or sometimes even at lower temps than water. Thus they also end up getting collected with steam.
Reverse Osmosis (RO)
During reverse osmosis, water with contaminants is placed on one side of the container. High pressure is applied to the water through a semi-permeable membrane letting out most of the contaminants. These include both bacteria and viruses. The pollutants remain behind, forcing the water to go through the membrane alone.
However, the gaseous pollutants cannot be removed by this method. Using this method removes naturally occurring minerals such as calcium and magnesium from the water. Therefore, after filtration, it is recommended to add some artificial minerals back into the water to replace those that escaped while filtering.

Types of Water Filters
Water Bottle filters
Water bottle filters are portable and can be acquired at a lower price from online and shop retailers. Mostly they are used for backpacking, hiking, traveling long distances. It carries a capacity of around 20 ounces depending on the size of these bottles.
To filter the water, there is a filter straw where water passes as you drink. It gets filtered before it gets to your mouth. Of course, these filters will not remove the contaminants 100 percent, but it is better than the bottled water.
A water pitcher consists of one filter; usually, carbon activated or sometimes with a layer that is a sediment filter and activated carbon block. It features a simple setup with a capacity more than that of the water bottle filters with about six or ten cups.
However, there are those pitchers which can go for 20 cups. But these require a nozzle at the top for the user to push. This filter can serve your medium family, though it might require regular refilling. And in case you need cold water, place the pitcher in the refrigerator.
Faucet Water Filter
With the Faucet Water Filter, there is a continuous flow of filtered water as the system is attached to the water source. This includes such as the tank or most people connect it to the sinks.
For any need of the filtered water for cooking, drinking, turn on the switch on the system and the water gets through the Faucet to your cup.
It will not occupy a lot of your countertop space but instead, give your kitchen a fabulous look.
Countertop water filters
This is more like the faucet water filters as you also connect it to the source of the water. Then your water is directed through a filter to the place where you keep your filtered water.
It offers large water capacities, though some may require regular refilling though it is not at a higher rate.
Must place your filtration system on the countertop and enjoy the filtered water. There are two types of these filters. The one connected directly to the water source and the other you pour over the water to be filtered through the filter.
Under-Sink Filters are filters that you attach to the sink or under the sink. It is tied directly into your main water such that you continue getting water both drinking and cooking in large capacity. Connecting your under-sink filter to the source pathway only filters the cold water leaving the hot water unfiltered.
Depending on the water usage, under sink filters can have a single filter or multiple filters. Usually for drinking water for a small family one filter is ok. However, for large families, multiple filters may be surmounted. It is a walk-over to replace the filters when they reach the end of their lifespan.
However, they tend to last longer than many of the other types of water filters. The installation process is more comfortable than whole-house systems. But it is a bit more expensive than faucet attachments and Pitchers.
Home Systems filter
Among all the filters discussed, whole-house filters are the most expensive type of water filter. They are designed in such a way that they filter the whole waters that come into your home. Water can be filtered at different points until all the contaminants are eliminated, then you start enjoying the clean waters. Most people regard a water softener as a whole-home systems filter.
